Aesthetic Contaminants

Characteristics of water which affect its taste, odor, color, and appearance (and may affect the objects touched by the water) but which do not in themselves have any adverse health effects in otherwise potable water. Suggested Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for various aesthetic contaminants in drinking water are part of the National Secondary Drinking Water Regulations issued by the USEPA. These aesthetic standards are advisory only, not enforceable by the USEPA.
